Extinguisher type must suit the fire class of the area, so a kitchen, a server room and a workshop seldom take the same unit. IS 15683 covers portable fire extinguishers and IS 2190 covers their selection and maintenance; check the current editions. Specify agent type and capacity for extinguishers, the kit size by headcount for first aid, and the eyewash type for chemical areas. Placement and refilling schedules are set with the site fire-safety officer.
